changing nicks

For some really weird reason, MSN for mIRC goes all schizo on me sometimes when I change my nick -- freezes the entire program, and if I try to reconnect, it freezes it again. Is there something I'm doing wrong? :\ Do other people have this problem?
Messenger itself allows me to connect with those nicks, but since I don't have it on this pc and have no rights to install, I can't get in to change it, and usually have to fix it when I get home (use MSN for mIRC on work pc).
Help?
